Highlights from S2 Ep9 of What Should I Do With My Life? with Steph Horwitz featuring Erica Davis

Meet the spectacular Erica Davis! From the court to corporate (get used to me saying that a bunch in this episode!) Erica is a multi-talented marketing professional, leader, athlete, world-traveler, and… she happens to be my colleague and friend at SAP! Erica is currently a Marketing Design Senior Specialist for SAP Customer Experience. In this episode, Erica shares about her journey to become a professional international basketball player, talks about how she transitioned from working the court to working a corporate job, and discusses the power and life-long impact of being on a high-achieving team. You’re going to love her.

Three Pearls of Wisdom from Erica Davis

  1. Erica shares about how during her experience playing professional basketball abroad, she was feeling like she was falling behind her peers who have “jobby jobs.” So many of us are looking at where others are, comparing ourselves, and trying to keep up. Even people who are doing amazing and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities (like Erica!) can still be challenged by this phenomenon. In our professional (and personal!) journeys, we all need to work on being where we are, feeling good where we are, and focusing on the now.

2. For Erica, this is the year of no! Erica shares with us how important it is to learn to say no; we are not failures or “bad” for saying no, however, it gives us the freedom to concentrate and excel on the things that matter most to us. As Erica said, there is only so much merit to being self-sacrificing and putting the needs of others above our own.

3. When you feel the imposter syndrome or self-doubt kicking in, take a step back and look at the facts. Erica says that we need to take our feelings out of the equation, and look at what we have done: look at the numbers, quotes, feedback, and how we have impacted people. These are all subjective proofs that we are doing well!
